Claudia, I enjoyed your clear and precise article. Perception is what drives us all and the truth is often lost or overlooked.

I agree with your 3 classifications on principle, but would pause to ponder on the size component - is it really that definable? Would it not be more a case of agility/mobility?

Your point regarding multiple points of contact is a good one. Speaking as a journalist, there are spokespeople who become so over-exposed that you shy away from using them, even if they are good talkers and reasonably knowledgeable. (A term people may or may not have encountered is someone being described as 'Mr Rent-a-Quote'). That's a pity for the organisation if that person is its only spokesperson (which is often the case when you strike this). I value specialist expertise and diverse points of view and relish it when I come across someone new and fresh ... I don't want to feel like I'm writing the same story all over again!

"If a journalist you are talking to – or, worse, the audience they are interviewing you for – doesn’t understand what you’ve said, then it’s a wasted opportunity."
Sometimes journalists (especially younger ones) worry about appearing stupid to an interviewee if they press for clarification because the person is using jargon. Interviewees, please remember that it's their job to write stories that can be read and understood not just by fellow CEOs or CFOs but the cleaner with a share portfolio or the plumber who's actually interested in his super... its their job to put it in plain English, so help them get that plain English explanation right.
Be helpful (and know you're being interviewed by someone who cares about clarity) if they pluck up courage to ask for more explanation...

Journalists still want the stories you don't want to tell us and that should always be the way that it works.

Once spun, twice shy, so journalists do tend to be wary these days. But I value those PR people who understand what a journalist's job is, providing valuable assistance - no strings attached - by putting me in contact with people who have expertise I can tap into.

I agree - we need commonality of terms. The point about a boutique fund manager being sufficiently aligned with investors to feel pain is a good one. Accountability to clients/investors is what should set boutique fund managers apart.
