Judges for the fourth annual Victorian Innovation in Funds Management Award, presented at the 2011 Melbourne Financial Services Symposium Gala Dinner last night, recognised international equities investment manager Wingate Asset Management with a special commendation.

The award is sponsored by the Victorian Government and managed by the Australian Centre for Financial Studies and recognises fund managers that demonstrate successful innovation in practice.

In commending Wingate, the judges said they were “impressed by the risk-controlled option-based implementation strategy employed by the management. This strategy is one of the most innovative seen in recent years and appears to be validated to date by solid performance”.

They also recognised Wingate as “a Victorian boutique fund manager that has established successful business operations in Victoria and demonstrated innovation in their investment strategies and business operations”.

Mr Chad Padowitz, chief investment officer of Wingate, said that the special recognition of Wingate’s approach, which combines long term capital growth with continual income generation, is particularly gratifying.

“We are the only Australian-based equity manager using exchange traded options to construct portfolios and also generate returns through option premiums, dividends and interest.

“By incorporating the often under-appreciated benefits of dividends and option premiums into our strategy, we seek to provide investors with long term outperformance by capturing the majority of the market’s strength whilst insulating investors from periods of market weakness.”

“It is encouraging to know that our approach stood out among the high quality competition and that we have been recognised by the judges,” Mr Padowitz said.

Wingate Asset Management is a joint venture between Australian Unity Investments and the Melbourne based Wingate Group. It is a boutique international equities fund manager with a large- company, value-based, investment philosophy. Since inception in 2005, the Wingate Global Equity Fund has provided investors with significant market outperformance of 5.7%pa*.
